The Pakistan Television Corporationis Pakistan's national television broadcaster. The first live transmission of PTV began on November 26, 1964, in Lahore. As of 2012, the PTV family.

History

Originally a private sector project in 1961 by prominent industrialist Syed Wajjid Ali who signed a joint venture agreement with Nipon Electric Company of Japan, leading Pakistani engineer Ubaidur Rahman was appointed by Wajjid Ali to head the television project. By 1962 after a series of pilot transmission tests the project was quickly taken over by the Ayub government in 1963 in the greater national interest of Pakistan. President Ayub Khan re-appointed Ubaidur Rahman in 1963 under the Ministry of Information to continue with the NEC joint venture collaboration in launch PTV. The project began with a tent on the back lot of Radio Pakistan, Lahore where a transmission tower and a studio were constructed. On 26 November 1964, the first official television station commenced transmission broadcasts from Lahore, followed by Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1965 (then the capital of East Pakistan, a third centre was established in Rawalpindi/Islamabad in 1965 and the fourth in Karachi in 1966. Later centres in Peshawar and Quetta were established by 1974. As with the other agreement, the government financed most of the funds while the private venture capitalists offered to fund the remainder. PTV launched a full-scale satellite broadcasting service in 1991-92 whereas Digital TV satellite broadcasting was launched in 1999.

History

Zee TV was founded by Subhash Chandra and was launched in India on 1 October 1992, becoming the first Hindi satellite channel. Zee formerly had a partnership with STAR TV. However, STAR TV ended their partnership with ZEE TV when Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation acquired. Zee TV was launched in the UK in March 1995, which acquired TV Asia the first Asian channel to be launched in the UK and Europe. Zee TV was launched in the USA on 15 July 1998. In the USA, some of Zee TV programmes are subtitled in English and some commercials are in English. An HD feed is already available in India, and one is expected to be launched in the US by the spring of 2012.

History

In late 1945, after the end of World War II, Masaru Ibuka started a radio repair shop in a bomb-damaged department store Shirokiya building in Nihonbashi of Tokyo. The next year, he was joined by his colleague, Akio Morita, and they founded a company called Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo The company built Japan's first tape recorder, called the Type-G. In the early 1950s, Ibuka traveled in the United States and heard about Bell Labs' invention of the transistor. He convinced Bell to license the transistor technology to his Japanese company. While most American companies were researching the transistor for its military applications, Ibuka and Morita looked to apply it to communications

Formats and technologies

Sony has historically been notable for creating its own in-house standards for new recording and storage technologies, instead of adopting those of other manufacturers and standards bodies. The most infamous of these was videotape format war of the early 1980s, when marketed the Betamax system for video cassette recorders against the VHS format developed by JVC. In the end, VHS gained critical mass in the marketbase and became the worldwide standard for consumer VCRs and Sony adopted the format. While Betamax is for all practical purposes an obsolete format, a professional-oriented component video format called Betacam that was derived from Betamax is still used today, especially in the television industry, although far less so in recent years with the introduction of digital and high definition.

In July 2000, a marketing executive working for Sony Corporation created a fictitious film critic, David Manning, who gave consistently good reviews for releases from Sony subsidiary Columbia Pictures that generally received poor reviews amongst real critics.When the scandal was revealed, Sony apologised to Ridgefield Press, the newspaper Manning was claimed to be from. Sony claimed it was unaware of the marketing ploy, and pulled the ads and suspended Manning's creator and his supervisor. In 2003, Sony paid the state Connecticut $325,000 in fines following the Connecticut Attorney General's investigation into Sony's alleged fraudulent marketing practices.In August 2005, Sony finalized a settlement to pay $1.5m to fans who saw the reviewed films in the US.

Criticism and controversy

In 2000, Sony was ridiculed for a document entitled NGO Strategy that was leaked to the press. The document involved the company's surveillance of environmental activists in an attempt to plan how to counter their movements. It specifically mentioned environmental groups that were trying to pass laws that held electronics-producing companies responsible for the clean up of the toxic chemicals contained in their merchandise. In early July 2007, Sony ranked 14th on the Greenpeace chart Guide to Greener Electronics. This chart graded major electronics companies on their environmental work.
